Biobased Purchasing

The Farm Security and Rural Investment Act (FSRIA) of 2002 mandated the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to develop and implement a comprehensive program for designating biobased products, as well as a directive to all federal agencies to increase their purchase and use of these designated or “preferred” biobased products.  Read more on the "About BioPreferred" USDA website.

On top of alternative fuels, Sandia National Laboratories is successfully using several biobased products such as hydraulic fluid for mobile equipment, adhesive & mastic remover, and vacuum pump oil.  Several other products types are also being implemented or tested.  These include penetrating lubricants, hand cleaners & sanitizers, sorbents, multipurpose & truck grease, and paint stripper.  If you have questions about any of these, we are willing to share our information if you contact us.
