Green Electronics Purchasing

As a member of the Federal Electronics Challenge (FEC), SNL is committed to purchasing "green" computer systems whenever possible.  "Green" here is defined using the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT), which considers the following factors:

  • Reduction/elimination of environmentally sensitive materials
  • Material selection
  • Design for end of life
  • Product longevity/life-cycle extension
  • Energy conservation (minimum requirement is Energy Star)
  • Manufacturer end of life management
  • Manufacturer corporate performance
  • Packaging

SNL has incorporated EPEAT registration into its computer purchasing contracts and bid language.

Successes:

SNL is participating again in the the Electronics Reuse & Recycling Campaign (ERRC) that is running from October 1, 2007 through September 30, 2008.

In FY 2007, SNL/New Mexico bought 97% of its new standard office computers, laptops and monitors with an EPEAT-Silver rating.  This is ahead of the new Executive Order 13423 FY 2008 goal of purchasing EPEAT registered models for 95% of applicable equipment.  Both Procurement and Computer Administrators have agreed to only accept applicable new systems into Sandia's common operating environment if they are EPEAT-Silver registered or higher.

During CY 2006, SNL/New Mexico purchased 2,822 desktop computers, 989 notebooks, and 602 additional monitors that were EPEAT registered with a silver rating.   SNL/New Mexico also participated in the Electronics Reuse & Recycling Campaign (ERRC) that lasted from November 15, 2006 through March 15, 2007.  During this time, SNL/New Mexico reused or recycled 104,700 pounds of consumer electronics.
