Source reduction is the highest priority in the pollution prevention hierarchy,
and is any practice that results in the reduction of waste, energy use or
resources at the source. Preventing pollution through source reduction is
accomplished by changing products, processes, operating practices, and technologies.
Two simple examples of source reduction include choosing to print double-sided
or determining a printed copy is not even necessary. These actions reduce
the amount of paper used that will eventually become waste and even prevent
the need for recycling.
